With the Internet, the information became global and profuse. This profusion, often redundant, brings a background noise, which submerges valid information. A theory developed by Claude Shannon in 1949 demonstrates that information is less perceptible when its mass exceeds a threshold.
In order to acquire the information as an appropriate source for the globalisation measure, International Focus has taken four years to identify relevant sources of information, looking at different views, which can be crossed. Indeed, some sources are controlled, biased, fudged... Nevertheless, they are still pertinent for they bring a way of communication planned by the emitting government. Notwithstanding, this information has to be counterbalanced by other sources, sometimes those provided by opponents or those emanating from international organisations.
After mining, International Focus brought to light many sources from diverse origins: international organisations (UN, EOCD, FAO, EU...), central banks, national and international research centres, think-tanks, blogs and, finally, some big national media. Those sources cross, enhance and bring a global and consistent coverage. Through more than 1300 qualified sources of information, International Focus provides a database, increasing everyday.
We processed, categorized and mapped this information..
We first measured the "noise". With regard to the information theory, this is called the "system entropy" or the measure of the uncertainty produced by the system. This fundamental measure allows us to get a thorough knowledge of what is being conveyed by the source.
Then, we developed information cartographies: globalisation integration index, frequencies of occurrence of the topics, developmental trends' follow up processes...
The globalisation integration index can be defined as the abilities of a country for communicating on deep mutations' trends, which our societies are subjected to at the start of the 21st Century: climate and environment, including energy and raw materials, economy and geopolitics, sciences and technology, society. The perception of this emitting country by others has also to be considered. In a global world, a one-track view no longer exists. Other peoples' opinions are as important as the message you want to pass on.
In the Globe Expert approach, we are able to measure also the global integration index, namely the perception of globalisation by humanity. How the social, economic, geopolitical, environmental, scientific issues are perceived worldwide?
The frequency of occurrence of the topics gives the possibility to visualise the keywords, which come out, come again, obsess, then are ignored by the current information suppliers, nationwide or worldwide. It offers the opportunity of detecting a harbinger in the "din", an unexpected and sudden sign.
To date, Globe Expert is a unique globalisation-watching tool, which allows us to base and refine the analysis of the global vortex and its dynamics. |
